FAQ

What's the difference between Silk soaps and the other oil based soaps?

Our Silk soaps have all of the same basic ingredients as our "regular" oil based soaps, but they also contain Grapeseed oil, Almond oil, and Shea Butter. The soap itself has smaller bubbles. Smaller bubbles means that as soon as you wet the soap and start rubbing it onto your skin, you notice how wonderfully creamy the lather feels. You can tell the difference between silk soap and ordinary soap with your eyes closed!

What are herbs?

Herbs are the fragrant leaves or stalks of plants whose stems are not woody. Shrubs and trees are woody; sage, basil, rosemary, and such are herbs.

What are spices?

Spices are derived from the bark, the buds, the fruit, the roots, the seeds, or the stems of plants and trees. Vanilla and cinnamon are spices. So are cloves. Orange, lemon, and lime are spices too, since they come from the fruits, although lemon balm and citronella (a lemony fragrance that repels mosquitoes) are both herbs, because they come from leaves.

What does an astringent do?

Astringents contract your skin tissue, thus reducing secretions. Simply put, they tighten your skin.

What does an emollient do?

An emollient sooths and softens your skin, making your skin more supple. Lotions are emollients, but soaps can be too.

What is an essential oil?

An essential oil is any concentrated, liquid containing volatile aroma compounds from plants, which are called aromatic herbs or aromatic plants. They are also known as volatile or ethereal oils, or simply as the "oil of" the plant material from which they were extracted, such as oil of clove. The term essential indicates that the oil carries distinctive scent (essence) of the plant.

Essential oil use in aromatherapy
Aromatherapy is a form of alternative medicine, in which healing effects are ascribed to the aromatic compounds in essential oils and other plant extracts. Many common essential oils have medicinal properties that have been applied in folk lore medicine since ancient times and are still widely used today. For example, many essential oils have antiseptic properties, though some are stronger than others. In addition, many are claimed to have an uplifting effect on the mind, though different essential oils have different properties. The claims are supported in some studies and unconfirmed in others.

What is a carrier oil?

Carrier oil refers to various kinds of natural organic oils that are used to dilute essential oils. They "carry" the essential oil onto the skin. Different carrier oils offer different properties and the choice of carrier oil can depend on the therapeutic benefit being sought for the product.

What ingredients do you use in making your soaps?

Each product we sell has a different set of ingredients. We list all of them right on the website.

Why do I see products listed in other great soaps that aren't in yours?

Many more ingredients are available to use in making soaps than any single soap maker needs to use, because many different substances will perform the same function. Using more of something than is needed would be redundant and, in fact, it could very well reduce the quality of the product. We select very carefully the ingredient we think will do the best job. If more than one will produce exactly the same result, we always try to go with the choice that will help us keep our prices low while offering the finest product any amount of money can buy.
